MAFIA BOSS HOLED-UP IN BUNKER
The moment Police arrested Aquino
ONE of Italy's most wanted Mafia bosses has been captured in Calabria after police used a pneumatic drill to dig into the basement of his Mother's home,where he was hiding.
Aquino 50, had been on the run for two years, after he was given a 3 and a half year prison sentence during an operation against his organisation, the 'Ndrangheta.
A Police Investigative unit used telephone taps to trace Aquino who was running his clan's drug-trafficking operations and other business. According to local Police this demonstrates that fugitives remain in there own area and cannot move far because they risk losing their leadership.
The bunker could only be reached via an electronically controlled trapdoor, so police drilled through the floor to arrest him. Aquino's nickname is " u pacciu ",meaning "the crazy one ", he was unarmed and in true Goodfella's style shook hands with the officer in charge, and complimented him on his work.
His capture is a breakthrough for the police who arrested his older brother and right hand man, Rocco, (the ' Colonel ' ) in Febuary, he was found by police running his buisness in the ceiling of his own home , in the same town. Apparently both brothers were said to be big players in cocaine trafficking.
Aquino's hiding place is the latest in a string of imaginative hiding places used by Mafia bosses.
In April a boss from Naples was arrested after he was discovered hiding in a refuge behind a mirrored wardrobe in his home. ( God , they must love D.I.Y. )
Three years ago police arrested another Mafia boss who was holed-up in a underground bunker equipped with a skateboard which he planned to use through a 200 yard tunnel to evade capture.
Giuseppe Setola a hitman, evaded arrest during a police raid on his home North of Naples when he fled down a tunnel linked to the sewage system beneath his hideout.
